If nothing seems to stop your puppy’s mouthing, take yourself out of the game and step away behind a barrier if needed. Exit the area promptly, stay outside for a minute or two, return, and give the puppy another chance. Repeat as necessary. It’s helpful to come back into the space prepared with toys and treats so the puppy has something else to focus on when you reenter the area.
Toileting Skills
Teaching your puppy where and when to toilet works well when there is a combination of consistency, common sense, and positive training protocols. While toileting outside the home makes perfect sense to you, everywhere is a toilet to your puppy unless you teach him where to go.
There are a number of ways to toilet train a puppy successfully, and it depends on where you live. If you live in an urban environment with no yard, you might want to paper train your puppy until he is appropriately vaccinated. When it’s safe for your puppy to be outside, you can start to transition him from toileting inside on the pads to outside on the street. If you have a yard or a safe outside area, you can use a combination of training pads and outside toileting, or you can skip pads altogether and take your puppy straight outside.
Housetraining is almost entirely about management. Your puppy should either be confined to a pen, crate, or behind a baby gate, and supervised at times when he has more freedom to roam. He will need to go out regularly, ideally every thirty minutes at first. Take him out into the yard or outside on a leash. If your puppy doesn’t toilet within five minutes, go back inside for a minute and then go outside to try again.
If your puppy toilets outside, praise him, and then play or walk him for a little before you bring him back inside and allow up to twenty minutes of unconfined time indoors with active supervision throughout.
After indoor unconfined time, confine your puppy to his crate or safe area so that you set him up for success by preventing him from having accidents in your home.
Don’t yell at your puppy if he does have an accident and never rub his nose in his feces or urine because your puppy may learn to toilet out of your sight rather than understanding that he was toileting in the wrong place. If you see your puppy toilet in the wrong place, interrupt him as gently as possible and take him outside to finish.
Housetraining is much easier when the entire family helps out. To improve the odds that housetraining will happen quickly, it’s a good idea to create a chart showing each hour of the day and who is responsible for taking the puppy out at that time. The same chart can be used to record whether your puppy peed or pooped or if there was an accident.
If your puppy is still having occasional accidents, stricter management might be necessary.
